Latest News from the Terrace

3 July:

HOT HOT HOT

Well, it has been, hasn't it?! We have been super-busy over the last couple of weeks, and dealing with the heat has meant a few changes to "normal service" including hiding all the pies in the fridge! Hopefully we will have a spell of more typically English weather now.

Of course National Jam Week has been and gone - here is the "big tart" featuring four seasons of Clippy's Apple Jams!

We have updated our stock recently as we have decided to do business with the Suma Co-Operative. Not only are they a highly ethical supplier who give us great service, they are based in the North - so it was easy to decide to go with them. Look out for new goods including a larger range of cordials and presses, some great organic soup and a range of pasta sauces and antipasti.

Don't forget our old friends though - Cliff continues to make those fantastic Clitheroe Sausages for us every week, Katie's fantastic pate arrives every Thursday, and Pendrills arrive with fresh farmhouse cheese on a regular basis, including the brilliant Barbers 1833 24-month mature cheddar. We have a large range of top quality olives and continental meats in stock too, so pay us a visit next time you're stocking up!

21 June:

NATIONAL JAM WEEK

It's the moment all you fruity people have been waiting for - it's NATIONAL JAM WEEK!

To celebrate, we are offering all of Michelle "Clippy" McKenna's jams at a price reduction all week, and Marcus will be making Cheshire's only "Four Seasons" jam tart - featuring Clippy's jams (Figgy Diggy, Rudebarb & Ginger, Very Berry and Blueberrylicious to mark all four seasons), it will be on display in the shop before making its way to a local school on Friday morning!

Come in and have a taste of the good stuff (Clippy's apple preserves feature on our sandwich menu too - our best-selling lunchtime treat "Clippy Chicken" is made with Michelle's marvellous Apple, Saffron and Cumin chutney!).

16 June:

IT'S SUMMERTIME!

Despite the usual mix of thunder, hail and floods the weather is warming up and we should all get the chance to enjoy a few sunny days out - whether it's trip to the seaside, a lazy day in the back garden, or in my case, strapping my crampons on, roping upand heading for a Swiss glacier! We can't deliver to Switzerland yet (still saving up for that private jet) - but we can make up lovely picnics for you - just check our special menu and ring us or drop in to tell us what you'd like and when you'd like to collect it! We appreciate a bit of notice for larger numbers

14 April: We are pleased to announce that next week will be Clippy Week at the Terrace! From Monday 20 April until Saturday 25 April we will be filling your tastebuds with recipes using Clippy's fabulous Apple jams, chutneys and jellies. More details will appear here in hte next day or so - but get ready for some very special one-off sandwiches and free tastings all week, including something special for St George's Day!

In the meantime, why not have a look at Clippy's Website to find out more?

2 April: A big change in the shop as (wait for it) we swap the till, prep counters and service counter around! Actually it makes things pretty different as now we are able to cook all through the day and make even more nice things to eat, right here at 473 London Road!

Some of the things we make are: sausage rolls (fresh every day, using actual real sausages - mad idea but what can you expect?); coleslaw, potato salad, hummus, soup, tarts, brownies, flapjacks, fruit salads, pasta salads, wraps, salad bowls and oh yes you already know about our sandwiches - voted "Best in Britain" by 10 out of 10 customers we bribed with free stuff.

Something else to tell you about is that we are now open until 6pm every weekday. Yes, we did try that before, but not many people seemed to venture out in the winter darkness. Now that BST is here, it's worthwhile opening the door a bit longer earlier in the week - so do come down and see what we've been cooking!

Enjoy the lovely weather

Marcus, Kimberley and Gemma

15 March: A whole month has gone by! It seems incredible. At last, it's still light when we close the shop at 6 on Thursdays and Fridays, and the daffodils are out in force.

New things to tell you about include a truly wonderful new pate which is made by Kate Thornton in Wilmslow. Katie's Proper Pate is made using free range chicken livers and completely natural ingredients. It tastes great, it doesn't travel far to reach us, it will cost you less than the Welsh pate you all know about - only one problem, we've sold almost our whole first delivery in the first two days! Never mind, you can still try it out as we have some for sampling, and new stock will be arriving on Thursday next week!

We also have some great French Garlic supplied by French Flavours in Wrexham. There is a choice of smoked or unsmoked bulbs which will add some really good flavour and aroma to your cooking.

Talking of aromas, we have sourced some more hard-to-find herbs and spices for you to buy by weight. These include Moroccan Ras El Hanout (Top of the Shop!) and Tagine blends, and dried curry leaves, which for some reason seem to be impossible to buy in the big chains.

Our De Cecco Italian Pasta Salads continue to do really well! Just in case we've confused anyone - all the pasta salads are made fresh on the premises (to order) using genuine De Cecco pasta which we cook and dress before making up your order.

Our buffet delivery service continues to get a great reaction from customers and we are now taking bookings through to July, so if you're thinking of having a party, family gathering or even just a few friends round for tea, come and talk to us about anything from a plate of sandwiches to home baked quiches and tarts, home-made salads, canapes, cheeseboards, continental saldads and insalata, blinis, fruit dishes and cakes - in fact almost anything you can think of!

15 February: Firstly, congratulations to Ann Wilson who has won the draw for a whole kilo of magnificent Clitheroe Sausages! We had a great Porcine week last week, and although we'll now have to let Percy Pig out to graze, we hope everyone enjoyed British Pork Week.

We are planning a Great Northern Cheese Week next week so look out for special offers from the 23 February onwards!

This week, we'll be putting De Cecco pasta salads on the menu. We'll make them up fresh for you so you can choose your own ingredients but whatever you choose, you can be sure you'll be getting the very best quality Italian Pasta, freshly cooked in the shop!

More Cowmans will be arriving on Wednesday, and we are re-stocking with Woodalls Bacon and hams after selling most of what we had last week! If you've not tried it yet, make sure you get down to the Terrace and see how different it is from the Supermarket Shrivel!

9 February:

It's BRITISH PORK WEEK at the Terrace! To encourage you to try some REAL Pork, we're having a series of special offers all week. On Monday, we're offering Devonshire's Pork Pies at the special price of £1-19. On Tuesday, there's a whopping 20% off the price of Richard Woodall traditionally cured bacon, pancetta, and Black Pudding. On Wednesday, there's 10p off bacon and ham sandwiches. Then, we're offering more Richard Woodall produce at a 20% discount on Thursday - this time, it's air dried ham, Cumbrian Royal ham, and Cumbrian Salami.  On Friday, Cliff Cowburn's Cowmans Clitheroe Sausages will be available at a 15% discount, and on Saturday we will draw our raffle to see which lucky customer has won a kilo of fabulous Clitheroe Sausages for free!

Of course Saturday is also St. Valentine's day, and we have a selection of lovely gifts including chocolates, Kim's beautiful hand-made jewellery, and fellas, if you're feeling extra-romantic, why not treat her to a nice bit of sausage too?

Have a beautiful week - and remember, music might be the food of love, but if your ingredients are cheap, you might be out of tune!

26 January:

It was quite busy last week! We have planned and published our buffet menu - don't forget we can deliver to you. The menu is a guide to what we can do but don't hesitate to ask us if you want something different - it's impossible to list every option and possibility in such a small space!

This weeks' Cowmans Clitheroe Sausages will include Cumberland, Pork & Tomato, Pork Chipolata, Lincolnshire Pork, Pork & Cheese as well as the magnificent Plain Pork.

Don't forget we have a wide range of other deli goods for sale, and also that we're always happy to take your orders for lunchtime sandwiches and soup on 01606 810444!

We're also pleased to report that our routine Environmental Health inspection resulted in a report of "good standards of hygiene throughout the shop, good practices and procedural control". We aim to keep it that way!

Have a great week!

20 January:

We now have a delivery van! So we will soon truly be "bringing great food to the people". If you are interested in buffet delivery please let us know either by emailing us or telephoning during opening hours.

This week's Cowman's Clitheroe Sausage selection includes the top-quality plain pork (links and chipolata style), Pork & Cheese (which disappeared in record time last week!), the exceptionally tasty Pork & Tomato, Lincolnshire style links and of course Clitheroe Hot n'Spicy. Give us a call to check availablity or to reserve some - they'll be here by Wednesday after lunch up until Saturday.

Our home-made soup continues to sell out! This week, we've bought sweet potatoes, parsnips, swedes, carrots and onions to make up a special winter vegetable recipe, and later in the week we will have a tasty tomato and basil soup to go with it.

We hope you have a great week - and remember to tell your friends if you like what we're doing!

Best wishes, Marcus, Kimberley & Gemma

15 January:

This week's COWMANS sausages include a very nice Pork & Cheese flavour, Pork & Tomato, as well as the excellent plain pork and popular Clitheroe Hot & Spicy.

We've added to our range again with yet more cooking ingredients, pickles, jams, chutneys, biscuits and cheeses, and we now stock an even wider selction of Woodall's Cumbrian Pork goods including smoked middle bacon, unsmoked shortback bacon, pancetta, air dried parma-style ham, Cumbrian Royal Ham and salami.

The shop is very quiet at the moment - and while it's great to have time to cook and plan our new menu, and also work towards getting our delivery service off the ground, WE NEED MORE CUSTOMERS!! So, if you like what we do, PLEASE tell your friends, neighbours and work colleagues about us - we do need your help to keep going and make all the hard work worthwhile. Thank you!!

7 January: HAPPY NEW YEAR, and WELCOME GEMMA!

We're busy re-stocking after Christmas at the moment - but for all you COWMANS fans out there we're pleased to say that we have had another delivery of FAMOUS CLITHEROE SAUSAGES today! They'll be available until Saturday (if they last that long!) and this week include Plain Pork, Pork & Apple, Pork & Honey, Beef & Beer, and the always popular Clitheroe Hot & Spicy!

We're expecting a large delivery of new farmhouse CHEESES from Pendrills tomorrow, and next week will see a complete re-stock with deli goods including many new lines for you to choose from.

We'd especially like to welcome Gemma Weale, who joined us yesterday. Gemma is a familiar face at 473 London Road and her help will be really valuable to us as we expand our business. We are very pleased to have secured her services! If you're wondering what we've done with Holly, we should tell you that she is spending 3 months in Finland - we hope she enjoys her stay and also that she comes back again in the spring to lend a hand in the shop!

We're now able to offer HOME-MADE SOUP, tea and real coffee to help warm you up during the cold winter days so please do call in and see us soon!
